CONTEST APPLICATION

CHILDREN’S PAGEANT

The Children’s Pageant is a traditional contest in which children from the ages of 4 to 11 participate by wearing a variety of Vietnamese traditional attire and showcasing their talents. The contestants will display their favorite Vietnamese traditional attire with the áo tứ thân, áo bà ba, and áo dài (Vietnamese dresses). Top contestants will move on to show off their talents through singing, dancing, reciting Vietnamese poetry, and much more. All children will be rewarded with a gift for their time and participation in the spotlight of the community

LOCATION & TIME

Cultural Village Stage on February 18 from 2:30PM to 4:00PM

ELIGIBILITY & RULES

  1. All eligibility, rules, and conditions as outlined in the Contest Terms & Conditions
  2. Applicant must be the contestant’s parent or legal guardian
  3. Contestant must be between the ages of four (4) and twelve (12) to be eligible to participate in the contest
  4. Contestant along with their parent or legal guardian must attend Children’s Pageant Rehearsal on January 28th, 2018 from 2PM to 6PM at a location to be announced. If the contestant cannot make the rehearsal, parent or guardian must notify UVSA one (1) week prior
  5. Contestant must be able to understand and speak some Vietnamese
  6. Contestant will be judged on various rubrics by a judging panel
  7. Contestant must dress in Vietnamese attire such as áo dài, áo bà ba, áo tư thân, or other Vietnamese ethnic attire

PRIZES

  • King and Queen: Gift basket valued at $75
  • 1st and 2nd runner-ups: Gift basket valued at $25
  • Each contestant will leave with a gift bag with school supplies

FLORAL ARRANGEMENT CONTEST

The art of floral arrangement is different for everyone. The placement of a rose, a cherry blossom, and a fern can change the appearance of the arrangement to one’s creativity and imagination. Springtime is best known for renewal, rebirth, regrowth of Mother Nature and lovely blooming of flowers. Demonstrate your creativity and artistic abilities by participating in the Floral Arrangement contest

LOCATION & TIME

The contest will take place in the Cultural Village on February 18, 2018. Specific time and location will be communicated to entrants by email.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. All eligibility, rules, and conditions as outlined in the Contest Terms & Conditions
  2. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older to qualify
  3. Contestants must use all tools provided by the Contest Committee and shall not use any other tools
  4. Use of resources such as the Internet, photos, electronic devices, and any other references are prohibited during the contest. Ideas must be gathered beforehand
  5. Each contestant must work independently and without assistance from anyone. Any assistance will result in disqualification
  6. Contestants will be given 30 minutes to prepare arrangement
  7. Contestants can take home their floral arrangement after the final results

PRIZES

  • 1st place: $100
  • 2nd place: $50

TET DANCE COMPETITION (TDC)

The Tet Dance Competition brings together dance teams from across Southern California to showcase their best dance moves to the world. Teams may compete for cash prizes or simply exhibit.  

LOCATION

TDC will take place on the main stage onSunday, February 18, 2018 with time TBD

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. All eligibility, rules, and conditions as outlined in the Contest Terms & Conditions
  2. Applicant must be the age of 18 or older to qualify
  3. Exhibition teams do not have to pay an application fee and will be not competing for the prize. Space for Exhibition Teams is limited
  4. All teams must be a group of 7 dancers or more
  5. Performances must be between 5 minutes to 8 minutes. One minute before the performance will be reserved for setup, and one minute after the performance will be reserved for clean up
  6. Dance teams must submit their dance mix by 11:59 PM on Monday, January 22, 2018
  7. Rehearsal will be at 7:00PM on February 15, 2018. Location will be announced at a later date
  8. Soundcheck will be at 9:15AM at the Main Stage on Sunday, February 18, 2018
  9. The stage dimensions are 42 FT x 32 FT not including any sound and lighting equipment that may be present on stage at any given time

PRIZES

  • 1st Place: $300
  • 2nd Place: $100

BALUT EATING CONTEST

LOCATION & TIME

The contest will take place in the Cultural Village. Specific time and location will be communicated to entrants by email.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. All eligibility, rules, and conditions as outlined in the Contest Terms & Conditions
  2. Applicant must be at least 18 years old to qualify
  3. All contestants will be given 8 eggs. The first one to finish all their eggs will take home the grand prize
  4. Contestant must use the utensils provided by UVSA. You are allowed to use your hands
  5. UVSA will provide salt & pepper
  6. All parts of the egg excluding the egg shells must be consumed before you can start on a new egg
  7. Spilling of egg contents, including liquids, and dropping unwanted parts from the balut is not permitted.
  8. Contestants will receive one warning the first time they spills or drop an item. Any additional occurrences will instantly disqualify contestant
  9. Contestant must show to the judges and audience that every egg is cleared and fully consumed in order to receive their final time.

PRIZE

  • Grand Prize: $50

PHO EATING CONTEST

On your mark, get set, start slurping phở! Join us for our 5th annual Phở Eating Contest. This intense contest brings in crowds rooting for the fastest Phở eating competitor. Who will bring home the grand prize this year and the title of Phở Eating Contest Champion? Sign up today and may the slurping be in your favor

LOCATION & TIME

This contest will take place at the Cultural Village Stage between February 16-18, 2018. Days and times for each round will be communicated via email

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. All eligibility, rules, and conditions as outlined in the Contest Terms & Conditions
  2. Applicant must be at least 18 years old or older to qualify
  3. Contestant must use the utensils provided by UVSA. No hands or other utensils may be used
  4. UVSA will not provide any condiments, but you may bring your own condiments (e.g. hoisin sauce, sriracha sauce)
  5. Bowl, spoon, plate, and paper mat must be clear of all broth, noodles, and meat to be considered finished
  6. Spills on the paper mat will increase your timed result depending on the size of spill. A time increase chart will be present during contest
  7. Contestant will be disqualified if they continue to spill after one warning
  8. Contestant must show to the judges and audience that everything in their bowl and mouth has been consumed in order to receive their final time
  9. The competition will have a series of qualifying rounds throughout the three-day event. The competitor with the top times from each qualifying round will be asked to come back on Sunday, February 18th for the championship round. Additionally, if a competitor passes a certain qualifying time, the contestant will automatically make it to the championship round
  10. Contestant may re-enter on the spot for a $10 fee if there is space available

PRIZE

  • Prizes TBD
  • First 30 contestants that sign-up online will receive an engraved pair of chopsticks to keep as memorabilia

TALENT COMPETITION

UVSA Tet Festival will be hosting a talent show competition on the main stage on the afternoon of Saturday February 17, 2018. This competition is open to all types of talent and across all ethnicities, both individual and group performances. Live auditions are required to participate in the talent show. The top talents will be chosen to compete in the final competition, live in front of thousands of audience members. Performances will be judged by a panel of renowned individuals. Participants must meet all criteria listed in the Terms & Conditions for the Talent Show Competition.

AUDITIONS

A live audition is required for the Talent Show Competition. Exceptions shall be made, under special circumstances, for performers who are unable to attend allotted audition times, long-distance travelers, and large groups who have the option of submitting a demo in place of a live audition. Live auditions will take place at the UVSA Office at 12831 Western Ave Unit B, Garden Grove CA 92841 upon scheduling:

FINAL COMPETITION

Finalists from the auditions will compete on the Tet Festival Main Stage on Saturday, February 17, 2018

TERMS & CONDITIONS

  2. Applicant must be at least 18 years old or older to qualify
  3. Screening & Live Auditions
    1. Participants must go through a screening and live audition process to advance
    2. Participants are responsible for all props, clothes, equipment, music, etc
    3. Audition acts are limited to 3 minutes
    4. 10 to 15 performances will be selected to compete in the Final Competition and each performer/team will be contacted by email with further instructions
  4. Final Competition
    1. Performances are limited to 10 minutes
    2. Participants are responsible for all props, makeup, clothes, music, and special equipment
    3. Professional judges will evaluate and provide instant feedback on each performance

PRIZE

  • Grand Prize – $750
  • Best Solo – $200 (subject to change)
  • Best Group – $200 (subject to change)

APPLICATION FEE

There is a $10 application fee for solo performance and $15 for group performance. There are NO REFUNDS.

PERFORMER APPLICATION

UVSA offers several opportunities for all performing artists and groups to showcase their talent on our main stage. Main stage programming is highly impacted and we recommend you apply as soon as possible. Additionally, if you’re interested in performing on the Cultural Village Stage, you may also apply here.

Main stage programming includes the following:

Friday – Miss Vietnam of Southern California Pageant
Saturday – Talent Competition* and Youth Night
Sunday – Dance Competition*, Community Performances, and Grand Concert

*For Competitions, please apply using the Contest Application.

Application Requirements

1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Performer(s) may be under 18 years old with parental or legal guardian supervision
2. All applicants must provide a performance demo link via YouTube, Vimeo, or similar
3. Applications must be received by 11:59PM on January 23, 2018.
